The Problem With “God”
©2007 by W. L. Graham
“God” has become such a common catch-all term for deity used by people of all faiths that it is often given a casual affirmation of presumed agreement as to the identity and/or concept of God, irrespective of any theological differentiation. In the English translations of the Hebrew and Greek Bible texts, the overuse of God as a singular proper noun has...

After Adam, the Man of Earth, and Deborah review the news of the week, we'll kick off the God Discussion show with Joe Zamecki, Texas Director of American Atheists, who will give us an update on the Atheists Helping the Homeless program in Austin. The effort has expanded, with an improved variety of "self help" care packages given to Austin's homeless people.
Charity is not the sole domain...

If the Texas School Board's decisions –
to omit academic discussion about why the Founding Fathers protected religious freedom in America by barring government from promoting or disfavoring any particular religion over all others, and
to delete Thomas Jefferson's enlightenment views from textbooks and replace them with Frenchman John Calvin's views –
aren't disturbing enough,...

As a Libertarian, my observation has been that the root of the "Tea Party" movement has been a Libertarian "tax us less" type of thing advocating fiscal conservatism and responsibility. Spurred by Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and the religious right, the movement has been joined by social conservatives and extremists and as a result, has turned into a circus of weirdness.
Libertarian Values.
Generally,...

Hello everyone,
It is always amazing to see my predictions unfolding, but what astonishes me most is that everyone is so surprised!
Isn't it interesting that the sign of Pisces rules both religion and poison? That it rules both spirituality and deception? Pisces ruled by Neptune the God of the seas, is a nebulous area, hard to pin down because it is water, the shifting sea, with no grounding. Therefore...

It's amazing the huge amount of ignorance ruling this world and to see the stars in full action on television set in Italy shows again how much we poor little human are responding. God enslaved every one of us to find the golden key of what it means to be human. “I...

Nowadays, you can find dozens, if not hundreds, of skeptics at YouTube. And more at Reddit. More at Facebook. Before social networking became popular in its present form, discussions took place in public bulletin board systems and newsgroup lists.
Fredric Rice, an atheist and skeptic all of his life, has compiled 25 years worth of choice snippets and discussions from the bulletin board systems and newsgroups...

The most atrocious brutalities in the history of mankind have been committed for the sake of religion. I wouldn't exactly call that a ringing endorsement to begin with. That, however, has been endlessly discussed and I'm not here to flog that tired horse. I simply wanted to point this out at the start so you know that I'm aware of it. I have no desire to linger on that since it is not the heart...

I’ve found myself face to face with Steven J. Gould’s concept of non-overlapping Magisteria recently and I would like to put this rather ludicrous idea in its place.
Gould’s idea in it’s basic form states that there is no conflict between science and religion. That science is concerned with explaining how the world works and religion is concerned with morality and purpose.
Now I’m going to ignore...

Why is it that a Christian will pray for healing … and is healed? Why is it that another Christian prays for healing and does not receive it?
Why are some people, regardless of theistic faith or lack of theistic faith, experiencing enough self confidence to be successful in businesses while others languish in poverty, no matter how much praying or education?
There's a common thread, and a powerful...

On God Discussion's podcast on January 21, someone in the chat room floated this question at me: “How can we best advance atheism in our own lives?”
It was late in the show and I’d gotten into a pretty good stream of conscious thought, which made for an interesting answer. It was interesting to me, anyway, because it really reflected the what we’re trying to do at the Avangelism Project.
That answer...

In a rousing sermon about civil rights, Reverend Amos Brown speaks on Gay Rights and Marriage Equality in San Francisco 2008. As a faith leader of a church that does not perform same sex marriages, Rev. Brown said that "Though I am a Baptist, I refuse to be a bigot."
He believes in freedom of religion and freedom from religion, and that religion is not to tell the state what to do.
In 1955, during...

There's a part of me that is nervous that America is turning into a theocracy.
Religious hatred toward gays is fueling this theocratic movement. Without knowing it, most people who vote against gay rights because of prejudice and religious notions of morality are helping to create a theocracy — and a theocracy that may backfire on their faith down the road.
My guess is that most people who voted...
