'Moral depravity' of the nation to be the focus of 'America for Jesus' rally – Rep. Forbes wants more prayer in the public square

Charisma reports that over the past week, pastors and Christian leaders gathered to plan their America for Jesus prayer rally meant to address the "moral depravity" in the United States today.  Rep. Randy Forbes, a Republican from Virginia who champions religious right causes, is apparently supporting the rally.  According to Charisma,

Rep. Randy Forbes, a leader in the Congressional Prayer Caucus, spoke to organizers about how critical it is to take prayer to the public square.

"We end up getting in buildings by ourselves, and we lift up God, and we pray," he said this week in Virginia Beach, Va.

"We talk about the importance of prayer, while they're out there ripping our school system a part, ripping our military apart spiritually, and changing the very core architecture of this nation that was founded on biblical principles," he continued.

As previously reported, "apostles" and "prophets" of the New Apostolic Reformation movement, like Cindy Jacobs of Generals International, Lou Engle of The Call, anti-gay preacher Bishop Harry Jackson, James Garlow pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church and chair of Renewing American Leadership (a Newt Gingrich-related organization before he declared his presidential campaign) and Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Leadership Conference are leading the 'America for Jesus' prayer gathering in Philadelphia on September 28-29. Jacobs declared that the rally was a "do or die moment" for the nation.

One of the sponsors listed on the America for Jesus website is Teen Mania Ministries, led by Ron Luce. Teen Mania Ministries was sharply criticized in a documentary produced by NBC last November.

"Much like the movement for independence in the 18th century, America for Jesus 2012 is a patriotic movement, not a political one," said John Blanchard, national coordinator for America for Jesus 2012. "Although the presidential election will be less than six weeks away, there will be no partisan divisions when we convene in Philadelphia. We don't need to follow the elephant or the donkey, but rather the Lamb of God."

According to its promotional brochure, America For Jesus is a "solemn assembly" that seeks to:

  • UNITE and make history as thousands gather to take a stand against the attack on freedom and faith in America.
  • SERVE in a citywide social justice movement and make a difference in the lives of the poor and disenfranchised.
  • PRAY with a massive army of intercessors to beseech heaven for the greatest awakening that our nation has ever seen.
