In an exclusive interview published yesterday, CNN's Barbara Starr spoke with Secretary Panetta about his talks with Israel on Iran's nuclear program.
Panetta said that Israel has not made a decision about a possible strike on Iran. Iran has not transformed its nuclear program into a weapons program, but if it did, the United States and Israel will attack.
"The viewpoint of the intelligence community is that if they [Iran] made the decision to go ahead in order to develop the enriched uranium and to develop the kind of weaponization that they would have to do, then we're probably looking at approximately a year," Panetta said. As to whether sanctions against Iran are working, he said, "We remain fully prepared to exercise whatever option the President of the United States decides with regard to this issue."
