While debates rage in Germany over religious circumcisions of infants, older boys are dying from circumcision in South Africa.
For the South Africans, circumcision is a rite of passage into manhood. Every year dozens of boys die from botched circumcisions performed by untrained traditional medical providers during initiation ceremonies. Some have even had their genitals fall off because of infection.
Government officials are working with tribal leaders to get additional medical providers to train and register with the health department.
