Once again, God decides to harden Pharaoh's heart so that he can use Pharaoh and his army as a way to show off divine power.
Pharaoh's army chases after Moses and the Hebrews, who are following a pillar of clouds. The Israelites are bitterly complaining as they travel, saying they would have been better off dying in Egypt. God parts the Red Sea and the people of Israel pass through it. When the Egyptians follow, God busts the wheels off their chariots and the sea closes back up and drowns them. Not one single Egyptian survives.
Exodus 14:23 reads,
"And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen."
However, all of the horses were already killed in the plagues (see Exodus 9).
Like the previous chapters in Exodus, Chapter 14 is another example of violence that could have been avoided. However, God "hardens the heart" of Pharaoh in order demonstrate how cruel and violent the Lord can be and to impress the Israelites.
