National Day of Prayer Task Force claims that atheists are awakening a 'sleeping giant'

NDP logoAccording to the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a non-governmental organization headed by Shirley Dobson (whose husband is conservative evangelist James Dobson), more Americans than ever will be participating in the National Day of Prayer on May 3 because of atheists who are "assaulting" religious liberty.

In a press release issued this week, the Task Force proclaims,

The will of the American people has prevailed to preserve our freedom to gather and pray on Thursday, May 3rd, in observance of the 61st annual National Day of Prayer. Over the past few years, the deliberate and relentless attacks by several atheist organizations on our religious freedoms have only increased the determination of those across this great nation. These assaults on our liberty have provoked the masses and awakened a sleeping giant, proven by the overwhelming increase in National Day of Prayer events. It is evident, that at our core, Americans are still a people of prayer.

The Vice Chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, John Bornschein, adds,

Right now the National Day of Prayer is experiencing more than 35% growth in prayer events over last year! That means the 61st annual National Day of Prayer will be the largest in recorded history! From prayer flights over state capitals, to 'Pray and Play' times for moms with toddlers, more people are answering the call to pray than ever before. This response is definitely a statement to those who would try to take away the very freedoms that our Founding Fathers sought and fought to ensure for themselves, and for us.

The group claims that prayer events will be held on May 3 at churches, business offices, parks, schools, prisons, libraries, nursing homes, government buildings, military bases, and more.

  • Ooooh, people are going to get together and talk to their hands.  Ooogedy boogedy!

The only assault on religious freedom and liberty is coming from the extreme Christian right wing.  You will NOT see any non-Christian speakers or clergy invited to attend any NDOPTF-organized events, nor any non-Christian events sponsored by the NDOPTF.  As is says on their website: "
People with other theological and philosophical views are, of course, free to organize and participate in activities that are consistent with their own beliefs." In other words, if you're not Christian (and a certain type, for sure), get lost.

That is true, Godless Veteran.  I remember a few years ago that some Mormons weren't allowed to participate in Utah because the NDOPTF deemed them to be non-Christian.

The  7 Mountains (of Christian dominionism) are referred to in the Task Force materials.  Bill Bright's widow is involved with the task force.  Bright is arguably the founder of the 7 mountains movement.

What takes place at these events?  Are they open to the public?  As an aside, why would a christian organization want a non-christian (and I'm not defining what any of that means) to speak at a christian event?  Why would atheists want non-atheists to speak at their events?  What am I not getting?

  • Huh?

What religious freedoms are being attacked?

This is one of the most adorable things I've read all day. Thanks for that.

    •  The "freedom" to impose RW Christianity on everyone, using tax dollars no less.
