Word play is the name of the game in this week’s God Discussion show. Two talented writers will be joining us Thursday, April 18, 2012 to talk about their fictional work.
1st Hour – Brett Cottrell, author of The Valley of Fire.
Not only is Brett a lawyer, but he’s an author and fiction writer.
His novel, The Valley of Fire, takes a unique approach to life's deeper questions – what’s good, what’s evil, and how God deals with this. He uses an interesting play on words and history to convey his ideas in a gripping novel.
When a rogue angel known as “Insanity” escapes and starts a polygamist cult in Utah, all Hell breaks loose. Friends murder friends, husbands abandon wives, heads leave their bodies, and a frenzied fat man beats his revered prophet with a broom – and this is just the beginning. Insanity's friends can stop him, if they can find him. They’ll follow the trail of broken bones and mangled lives he littered along Utah’s Route 666. Unfortunately, in their rush to recapture him and clean up his mess, they might accidentally start Armageddon. It's hard to say though. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse didn't explain their plans when they arrived in Nevada's Valley of Fire. They just flipped everyone the bird. One thing is certain: the road to rendition is paved with bad intentions.
Brett studied political theory at Boise State and graduated from The George Washington University Law School. He’s a native of Las Vegas, “born and bred in Sin City,” which he says explains a lot.

2nd Hour – Ivan G. Goldman, author of Isaac, a Modern Fable.
In a brilliant and engrossing fashion, Ivan Goldman follows Isaac beyond Genesis into the 21st century.
After being spared from Abraham's blade, he's been granted eternal youth and wanders the earth as a soldier of fortune. Turning up at a coffee shop in Los Angeles, he falls in love with Ruth Canby, a brilliant, breezy academic with a troubled past.
Isaac suspects he was forgotten, "a crumb dropped unnoticed in a kitchen crevice." Perhaps whatever saved him is long gone, leaving him "a puppet without a puppet master, like one of those Japanese soldiers stranded on an island after World War II."
Isaac and Ruth must ultimately confront a sinister, enigmatic phantom that's stalked him for forty centuries. The story makes stops that include the Spanish Inquisition, a luxury box at the Super Bowl, and the infamous cells of the Tombs of New York City. Along the way it takes stock of time and chance, good and evil, faith, forgiveness, God, Satan, and the power of everlasting love.
New York Times-best-selling author Ivan Goldman's fourth novel Isaac: A Modern Fable was published by The Permanent Press this month. His novel, The Barfighter, was nominated as a 2009 Notable Book by the American Library Association. A Fulbright Scholar, his writing has appeared in Columbia Journalism Review, Utne Reader, The Nation, National Review, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He lives in Los Angeles.

Final Segment – 3 Days of Dominionist Fun.
In our final segment, we’ll catch up with Gary and Chris who live in Sedona, Arizona, and personal friends of Deborah, your host. For three days, Gary and Deborah attended a religious festival whose main speakers were well-known 7 Mountains Christian dominionists, such as Lance Wallnau. A full blown article will be published on GodDiscussion.com, but before that’s done, we thought you’d enjoy a snippet about our firsthand experiences.
