Jessica Ahlquist, of Rhode Island, was the sixteen-year-old teenager who challenged the Constitutionality of a banner at her school, receiving a lot of harassment, online threats, and denial of services for doing so. The banner, at Cranston High School West, contained the phrases "Our Heavenly Father" and "Amen." She won the lawsuit and the school decided not to appeal, after a meeting at the school.
During the Reason Rally, in Washington D. C., the American Humanist Association (AHA) gave Ahlquist a $63,000 scholarship, which she accepted. Ahlquist also gave a brief speech at the Reason Rally, which is now considered the largest gathering of atheists in history.
Ahlquist's speech:
Hemant Mehta, the Friendly Atheist, started the scholarship campaign.
