Hate crimes against American Muslims surge along with a rise in anti-Muslim sentiment

hate crimes graphicNBC News reports that anti-Muslim sentiment in America is on the rise (see video embedded below).  While FBI statistics show that violent crime is declining nationally, hate crimes targeted at American Muslims are surging.  The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) finds this alarming.

According to the most recent FBI report, crimes against Muslims increased 50 percent.  Last year, mosques were attacked in 13 different states.  It's a trend that civil rights organizations worry may be the result of political rhetoric.

In 2011, over 20 states attempted to ban Shariah law, although there has been no attempt to implement Shariah law in U.S. courts.  Recently, the Lowe's retail chain removed its advertising from a Muslim reality show after the conservative Christian group, The Florida Family Association, claimed that the show  "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

Yes, but according to FBI 2010 Hate Crime Statistics:

Hate Crimes with a Religious Bias:

Of the 1,552 victims of an anti-religion hate crime:

67.0 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
12.7 percent were victims of an anti-Islamic bias.
4.2 percent were victims of an anti-Catholic bias.
3.0 percent were victims of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.5 percent were victims of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
9.1 percent were victims of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
3.5 percent were victims of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).

Your omission of a discussion about hate crimes in general distorts the data.

Thank you for the update. The report was based on what NBC News said, as it stated at the very beginning of the article.

Can you please share a link to go along with the correction? Also, Grace, are you trying to minimize the rising level of hate toward Muslims? The point of the article is that it is rising, not to an in-depth comparison with other religions.

This is a pity! In this way we are heading towards a new war. It's amazing how lack of respect, we are all human beings, children of one God!

The SPLC says that there are ten individuals who are most responsible for anti-muslim sentiment in the u.s., with their influence reaching beyond their numbers, and with an agenda that goes beyond reasonable concern about terrorism into the realm of demonization. Oh, and yes, there is a tie-in between zionism and anti-muslim sentiment. But why am I not surprised?
