Chevrolet's clever ad for today's Super Bowl (viewable online) has Christians and conspiracy theorists seeing a secret message that the end is nigh.
The ad plays on the 2012 doomsday that some claim is predicted with the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. To the tune "Looks like we made it," the ad portrays a Chevy Silverado pickup truck emerging from rubble. With a fluttering newspaper bearing the headline "2012 Mayan Apocalypse, Will World End Today?" stuck to a traffic light in the beginning scene, the driver and his dog navigate through a post-apocalyptic environment, where they are joined by other Silverado pickup truck owners.
"They didn't drive the longest lasting, most dependable truck on the road. They drove a Ford," one of the survivors says as they eat Twinkies.
A YouTube user named "Adrinilinjunky" doctored up the ad to portray Christian messages. He wrote in the description,
The're [sic -- They're] subconciously [sic -- subconsciously] preparing you; for what is to come. Seek the Lord today my friends, before it's too late! God bless, Jason
Pastor Dave of "Trumpet of God Ministries" sees a sinister message in the ad. "We were talking about the Illuminati and the music industry in Hollywood," he mused, "Are they trying to tell us something?"
