The saga between Moses and Pharaoh continues in this chapter, with more plagues inflicted by God on the Egyptians.
Every single one of the horses, donkeys, cattle, camel, sheep and other animals owned by the Egyptians are killed by a plague. The Hebrews' animals are spared. After this, Pharaoh still did not relent and let the people go.
Then, Moses and Aaron throw ashes up to the sky and it turns into festering boils upon all of the men, women and children of Egypt, as well as all animals (apparently all the animals that weren't killed in the first verses of this chapter). The Hebrews are spared. Again, Pharaoh does not relent because "the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart."
So Moses and Aaron tell Pharaoh about a big storm about to come in and warn them to instruct the Egyptians to get their livestock in from the fields (? – see comments below). God then rains great big huge chunks of hail and coupled with terrifying lightening that destroys all people, animals and plants in the Egyptians' fields. The Hebrews are not affected. Pharaoh at first concedes, but then changes his mind after the storm stops.
Note – Due to his rage over the hateful, murderous nature of the bible god who indiscriminately kills children, innocent men and women, and animals, Chelev swears quite a bit in the following video, questioning why people would worship such a character. People who are easily offended by swear words should not watch this video but instead, watch the bland version in the "About" section linked above.
This chapter conflicts with itself. First, all of the Egyptians' cattle are killed by a terrible plague (Exodus 9:6). Then, in Exodus 9:19 they are warned to get their cattle out of the fields because of the huge hailstorm coming — how could this be, if all the cattle were dead? Exodus 9:25 says that all of the beasts that remained in the fields were smashed by the hail, which cracked trees and destroyed the crops. See for yourself in the King James Version. Where did these cattle come from if the cattle had already been killed?
