"Buddhism Plain and Simple" offers a clear, straightforward treatise on Buddhism in general and on awareness in particular. Steve Hagan presents the Buddha's uncluttered, original teachings in everyday, accessible language unencumbered by religious ritual.
1 Star Buddhism Plain and Simple
By trying to make it simple the author ended by distort the content and make it painful to read. the author try desperately to sound knowledgeable but it sound more like it really did not get the fundamentals of Buddha's teaching. he preach instead of showing a way, enumerate instead showing a path. the book will bring only confusion to anybody rather than opening the mind. it is not a realization of our suffering but rather a mirror of Mr Hagen own distraction on believing or trying to be a zen master. Obviously having been allowed the title of teacher went straight to the head of the person but certainly did not enlighten him. well at least that what i felt and that is my own feeling. i would recommend to start with other reading materials.
5 Stars Life Changing Book, Don't Die Without Reading
This is truly the most amazing book I have ever read. This books simply presents a philosophy of living unlike anything ever presented. You don't have to be of any particular religion to appreciate its powerful content. It's a must read for any westerner confused as to the nature and meaning of eastern thought. I have read this book no less than 15 times and I continue to draw from its powerful teachings. Happiness (in the conceptual western experience) will no longer be longed for as some nebulous goal or process, but as a deep understading that life is an everflowing, unpredictable pattern of ups and downs. You can't change it, predict it nor wish it differently, it just is. To accept this as a true wholly fact devoid of judgement is to be enlightened. The author should be commended on a simple description of what otherwise is very confusing in multiple texts. I thank him for the life changing experience, I should pass it along to many others.
5 Stars Get this book
Hands down, the best book on buddhism out there. Skip the frills and cultural trappings and get this book. 160 pages but it's really all you need to know. Excellent!
5 Stars Goes to the Essence of Buddhism, Without Frills
Forgive my lack of originality, but I believe the review by Robert Pirsig presented on the book cover says it best:
"This is the clearest and most precise exposition of Buddhism I have ever read. If you're looking for enlightenment rather than just scholarly knowledge, you'd better read this."
I can only add that this book is best read many times, and slowly each time, taking care to really explore and ponder its messages.
Very highly recommended for anyone interested in spiritual growth.
5 Stars Just wonderful!
This is one of the best book on buddhism and zen I have read. It is simple, moving and to the point. Steve Hagen is authentic and his words have a clarity and vivaciousness I have not found in many other books on the subject. It is both philosophical and approachable. Simply Wonderful!
