A personhood amendment to Wisconsin's state constitution is in the works. State Representative Andre Jacque is currently circulating a state constitutional personhood amendment for co-sponsorship.
In a video promoting his personhood amendment, Jacque declared that "there is a little bit of a flaw" in the state constitution:
We basically require that you be born to have access to the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And what this simply does is take out that requirement that you be born to have these inalienable rights that I think we all should enjoy as human beings.
Jacque is of the opinion that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the "born" clause would deny "all citizens" of the state a guarantee of life.
The Wisconsin personhood amendment would amend Section I of the state constitution so that it would read:
Equality; inherent rights. Section 1. All people are equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; to secure these rights, governments are instituted, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. As applied to the right to life, the terms "people" and "person” shall apply to every human being at any stage of development.
Supporters of the personhood amendment are putting up billboard signs in Green Bay which read, "You. Me. Everybody. We're all just grown up embryos."
“The Personhood movement is growing rapidly, and we expect great things in Wisconsin,” stated Keith Mason, President of Personhood USA. “Personhood USA is in it to end it, and as we continue to see new personhood amendments and personhood efforts, we are witnessing a historical movement to finally end the destruction of human lives and to protect women and children at all stages of life.”
