At the end of Genesis, Joseph — who championed the Israelis — died, so they had no diplomat in Egypt. Joseph's brothers and Pharaoh had also died and the new Pharaoh was not as sympathetic to their cause. The Israelis had moved to Egypt because of a terrible drought and were increasing in number at an astonishing rate (see the discussion points below).
In an attempt to curb their growing population, Pharaoh commanded the midwives to kill all the male babies, but they lied to Pharaoh and did not do so out of fear of God. Additionally, the Israelites were made into slaves because the Egyptians were afraid that if there was a war, the Israelites would join up with the enemy. It's unclear how this was done, given that the Egyptians were outnumbered. As slaves, the Israelites were worked without mercy.
Pharaoh tells the Egyptians to throw any male children into the river and to save the daughters.
The Israelite population went from 70 (or 75) to several million (Exodus12:37, Exodus 38:26, and Numbers 1:45-46) in just a few hundred years. As noted elsewhere in this blog,
Consider this wonderful fact that John Armstrong presents in God vs. The Bible:
- Exodus 1:7 says that the children of Jacob were "fruitful."
- Exodus 1:5 says that there were 70 of them when they settled in Egypt.
- Exodus 6:16-20 says that there were four generations from the children of Jacob to Moses: Levi, Kohath, Amram and Moses.
- Exodus 12:37 says that the Israelite men number 600,000 plus the women and children when Moses led them out of Egypt.
- Assuming a 1:1 ratio of men to women, this means the adult population Jewish-Egyptians went from 70 to 1,200,000 in four generations.
- For this figure to make any sense, each Jewish-Egyptian woman would need to have an average of 51.6 children with no infant mortality. This means that each would have to be constantly pregnant from ages 15-40 with twins.

Not to mention the amazing number of children born, but Exodus 1 only mentions two midwives. They must have been very busy delivering babies!
