The British do not read their bibles.
Although they do not read the bible, approximately three-quarters of the 900 people polled said that they owned a bible.
According to Australia's News.com, fewer than 1 in 20 people can name the Ten Commandments and that young people view the bible as old fashioned and irrelevant. The article goes on to state:
Forty per cent did not know that the tradition of exchanging Christmas presents originated from the story of the Wise Men bringing gifts for the infant Jesus, while 60 per cent could not name anything about the Good Samaritan, the Durham University study found.
Editor's Note – We do not believe that the comment about Christmas present exchanges is correct. Christmas is actually a pagan holiday that involved gift exchanges long before the Wise Men story.
The article quoted Rev. Brian Brown as saying,
"We have got to recognise that it (the Bible) is the foundation of our society, upon which our whole culture has been based," he said.
"To understand it and to live in it you do need an understanding of the Bible."
