Bella, a six-year-old terrier-German Shepard mix, defended her home, only to get stabbed between the eyes by one of the intruders. Neighbours saw her running down the street with the knife in her head as she chased after the intruders and neighbours called her caregiver, Vernon Swart.
He was home when the neighbours called, but was in disbelief until he saw his dog, who rode to the vets office as though nothing was wrong, except when she occasionally bumped the window. Shocking and disturbing pictures show her with the knife stuck about six inches into her head. (Watch your stomachs, if you have sensitive ones and follow the red warning link)
He said: 'I was in the house on Saturday morning when the neighbours called to say our dog was running around in the street with a massive knife in her head.
'I didn't believe them but when I went outside I saw it for myself.
'The neighbours said they had caught intruders trying to enter their home and they must have then tried to get into my place when Bella attacked them in our garden.
'One of them had stabbed her right in the head and the end of the knife was poking out between her eyes.
'I feared the worst and assumed she was going to die, but incredibly she was running around as if nothing had happened.'
Swart feared the worst, but Bella is home again, recovering from her injury. The vet stated he had a difficult time getting the knife out of head and had to use his legs as leverage to pull the knife out of her head.
'The vet couldn't believe what he was seeing and said he had no idea how Bella had survived.
'He put her under an anaesthetic and then pulled the blade out.
'It was imbedded so far into her skull that he had to put his knees up against Bella's head and lever it with his arms.'When we saw the size of the knife we were absolutely shocked.
'The vet said it must have missed her brain by fractions of a centimetre and otherwise she would have been dead.'
The knife was handed over to the police after it was removed and a case concerning property damage was opened. The two suspects are not in custody, but police are looking for them.
Meanwhile, her caregivers say they would have been lost without her if she had died and are relieved that she is OK. The caregiver would like Bella to receive a few moments in the room with the two intruders after the police catch them.
'I've told the police that if they find the guys who did this we'd like to leave them alone in a room for a few minutes with Bella, and she'd quickly get her revenge.'
I am sure she would just love to chew them a new one, but she is alive, well, and recovering nicely, without any reported permanent damage that would cause her any lifelong problems. However, it never ceases to amaze me what others survive as the hands of bad humans. Hopefully, Bella gets some sort of reward for her heroism.
