The Jews of Iran

It is not easy being a Jewish MP in an assembly that routinely calls for the destruction of Israel.

Claiming a lineage stemming back 2700 years, a Jewish community survives in Iran and is the largest Jewish community in the Middle East outside of Israel.

Iranian Jews' rights are protected by law.

They're exempt from the ban on alcohol, although discretion is advised. In 1979, most fled the Islamic Revolution to the US. The Jewish community has become increasingly devout since that time.

Iran prefers to have Muslim people in its universities and factories. For many Jews in the country, Iran is in their blood and Islamic fundamentalism will not drive them out.

There are 25,000 Jews living in Iran. When Israel backed a plan to pay Iranian Jewish families $60,000 to settle in Israel, the Society of Iranian Jews met the announcement with scorn, issuing this statement: "The identity of Iranian Jews is not tradable for any amount of money. Iranian Jews are among the most ancient Iranians. Iran's Jews love their Iranian identity and their culture, so threats and this immature political enticement will not achieve their aim of wiping out the identity of Iranian Jews."

One Response to “The Jews of Iran”

  1. Iran is a country of southwest Asia. Inhabited since c. 2000 b.c. by Iranian peoples, the region later became the core of the Persian Empire. Now, people can't go to Iran because of the war, I am sad about what's happening to this country…especially, sad for all the people out there..
