This story on the Oklahoma Citizens Proclamation for Morality, authored by State Rep. Sally Kern, originally aired July 2, 2009. The story aired on OETA Public Television's "The Oklahoma News Report" as reported/produced by Lori Rasmussen and photojournalist Aaron Byrd.
About 250 people showed up for Kern's proclamation ceremony. About half protested and Kern viewed those who protested as being intolerant.
Not all of Oklahoma's representatives and religious groups — including the Mainstream Baptists of Oklahoma — agree with Kern. The Council of American Islamic Relations also finds the proclamation to be disturbing.
Rep. Ryan Kiesel's response to Rep. Sally Kern's so called proclamation of morality is below. He points out that many of Kern's facts are wrong and dishonest, and says that the economic problem has to do with what goes on in the boardrooms, not bedrooms.
Here are some clips from Kern's press conference. She claims that the Founding Fathers viewed establishment of religion to mean government payment of pastor salaries, mandatory church attendance and a church requirement for running for office. She claims that they did not want to separate faith from public life.
She says that the people who protested are intolerant. She also feels that her proclamation is not dividing people, but is intended to "stir up the vast majority of people." She cites outdated polls to support her position and says that the vast majority of Americans hold Judeo-Christian values.
