The Bible Slam: Genesis Chapter 37

This chapter focuses on Joseph, the second youngest son of Jacob/Israel.   Jacob (aka Israel) favors this boy and gives him a coat of many colors.   Joseph has dreams in which his brothers bow down to him, which gets his brothers angry.   They dump him in a well, where he is found by Midianites merchantmen, who either sell him to some Ishmeelites or to an Egyptian officer for Pharaoh (there are conflicting accounts in this chapter).   Nonetheless, Joseph ends up in Egypt where he is a slave.   His father, believing the stories told by his sons, thinks that Joseph has been killed by wild animals and mourns.

Talking Points.

Dreams. As the story unfolds, Joseph's dreams will become true.   Dreams are noted throughout the Old Testament; yet, in Deuteronomy we find that:

  • [Deut. 13:5] And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death (speaking of dreams that do not comport with God's will)
  • [Deut. 18:20-22] But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Apparently, if you have a dream, speak it, and it does not come true, you should be put to death.

Conflicting Information.   In Genesis 37, verse 28, the Midianites sell Joseph for 20 pieces of silver to some Ishmeelites.   At verse 36, the Midianites sell Jospeph to the Egyptian officer.   Are the Ishmeelites and Egyptians the same?

The Jesus / Joseph Parallel.

According to the Zeitgeist movie, Jesus was a prototype of Jesus.
