In their "universal declaration of human rights," a group called "Familiokratos" has issued a "call" that embraces the conservative values espoused by the religious right. These values include:
- Human rights begin at conception and ends at natural death (in other words, the group endorses "personhood" and opposes doctor assisted suicide);
- Marriage is between one man and one woman; and
- Parents have the right to home school their children.
Familiokratos wants these values to become legislation worldwide and recently sponsored a conference in Brussels to discuss how to carry out their agenda in Europe.
Among the speakers at the June 26-30 conference was New Jersey Republican Christopher Smith, who is on his 16th term in the House of Representatives and serves as a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Smith's speech before the group was titled "Advancing Legislation from a US Perspective and an Elected Official's Viewpoint." In the States, Smith has sponsored and co-sponsored a mix of healthcare legislation and "pro-family," "pro-life" legislation. He's won many awards from religious right groups, including the National Right to Life and Christian Coalition. Smith sponsored the contentious HR 3, No Taxpayer for Funding Abortion Act, in January which strips away tax deductions for health insurance policies and health savings accounts that are used to pay for an abortion and restricts healthcare related to abortions only to "abortions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest or in cases where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, injury, or illness that would, as certified by a physician, endanger her life if an abortion were not performed."
Also appearing at the Familiokratos Coalition Conference was Roger Kiska, legal counsel of the Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group that says there is no constitutional separation of church and state, as well as a number of speakers from the European Parliament and international "pro-family" activists.
Conference delegates agreed on the following three initiatives:
- To continue advancing pro-life and pro-family legislation in Europe aiming to protect children in the womb and uphold the family.
- Affirming the Right to Life, from conception to natural death, as a fundamental human right.
- Supporting Family, Marriage between a man and a woman and Parents' Primary Rights, especially that of education of their children.
