Southern Baptist Convention Looking at the Problem of a Decline in Membership

At this year's Southern Baptist Convention assembly, 8500 members discussed the problem of a decline in membership.   The assembly is also attempting to deal with a lack of funding.   The sources of revenue comes from church membership, so with decline memberships, funding is also going down.

Approximately 70% of its adolescents quit when they are in college and of that number, only 30% return in later years.

Drawing people back into faith is being advocated as something that should be a big part of the discussion at this year's assembly.

The Baptist faith has been around for approximately 400 years.   The church does not operate from a top down hierarchy; instead, it emphasizes individual church's autonomy.

A friend of mine has a couple of Southern Baptists at his workplace and finds them a very legalistic bunch of people. The guy in the video was right that it would do them good to stop fighting against the culture and start serving the culture they are in. Also I would like to see their stupid prohibition on all alcohal gone and yes, they too, need to revise their strict legalistic view on divorce and remarriage and this is just only a start.
