The Home Schooling Trend

Home schooling is a growing force in the United States, where families opt out of the public education system in favor of parent-supervised study. The country's evangelical Christian communities are largely behind the growth, seeking to teach their children Biblical creationism instead of the scientific theory of evolution. But home schooling by politically progressive families is also on the rise.

Approximately 1.5 million children are home schooled. The most common reason cited by parents for home schooling is that they wanted to include religion in the curriculum. Beyond religious reasons, some parents cite violence and drugs in the public schools as a reason for home schooling.

Social networks are available so that children have some social interaction beyond the home. There are state standards in science, math and literature that must be met by home schoolers.
