Being a straight woman in a mostly conservative family with grown conservative children, hasn’t made my efforts to help bring equality to the GLBT community easy. However, it was because of my advocacy in the arena of gay-marriage politics that I met Deborah, the site manager of God Discussion. She found my YouTube videos advocating for the legalization of gay marriage and contacted me.
After I published my book “The Spell of Religion and the Battle Over Gay Marriage” Deborah asked me to be her first guest on the God Discussion radio show. I felt honored to lend my voice to such an important topic and to be a part of such a progressive and liberating website. For two hours we discussed the role religion plays in the politics of gay marriage, where I explained my belief that denying gay couples the legal right to marry is eroding our constitutional promise to all Americans of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness – not to mention equal protection for all under the law.
When I opened an email the other day from the Courage Campaign and saw that Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for his movie “Milk”, were teaming up to do another equality project and they were asking for the public’s help, I couldn’t help but take them up on their offer. I had used Dustin’s Oscar acceptance speech as the final page in my book. Dustin and Courage Campaign are asking people to submit “My Testimony” videos (a term used in his, and my, former Mormon faith) regarding equality for the GLBT community and they will pick the top three. Dustin will then personally meet with the winners who will be included in his project..
I titled my Video “God Does Love All Her Children, Even the GLBTs” because of the barrage of hurtful rhetoric coming from the religious right which often attempts to paint the entire GLBT community as sinners and abhorrent in the sight of God. I have a testimony that that is blatantly false, and I wish to express that publicly.
Please take the time to watch and share my video and make comments. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved in this project. You can also view it and comment on YouTube. Let the fun begin.
