Conservative groups in Washington began collecting signatures for a ballot referendum to block a new state law that substantially expands rights for domestic partners.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the campaign manager for Families Standing Together, a civil rights group that supports rights of domestic partners, said that:
… the domestic-partnership law provides barely a quarter of the rights available to regular married couples. For example, same-sex couple would not be able to file a joint federal income tax return.
Religious groups that are backing Resolution 71 which would ask voters to overturn Senate Bill 5688, which was signed into law and expands domestic partnership rights, are apparently willing to spend millions of dollars on a campaign because they fear that domestic partnership rights will lead to same sex marriage.
Other religious groups are not sure this is a good idea, especially since most of the voters seem to approve of domestic partner laws. They are concerned that fighting the domestic partnership laws will further divide the community and alienate churches.
Resolution 71 supporters need slightly over 120,000 signatures by July 25 if they want their resolution on the ballot.
