The Bible Slam: Genesis Chapter 25

Abraham, who is over 100 years old, "takes" a new wife named Keturah and they have six sons.   However, only Isaac (his son from Sarah) receives all of the inheritance.   Abraham also had a number of concubines (it does not say how many or when he mated with them) and gave the sons borne by the concubines gifts.   At 175 years old, Abraham dies.   Isaac buries him in the cave where Sarah is buried.

Ishmael, who was Abraham's son through the Egyptian slave, lives 137 years and dies. His genealogy is written in this chapter.

Isaac takes Rebekah as his wife when he is 40 years old and complains to God because Rebekah is barren.   God intervenes and Rebekah has twins, who fight with one another in the womb.   Esau, the older twin, is born red and hairy and turns into a hunter.   Isaac favors him because he provides lots of venison.   The younger son, Jacob, is "plain" and dwells in tents and Rebekah favors him.

The chapter ends with Esau selling his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup and some bread.

Questions and Comments.

Polygamy appears to be endorsed, since Abraham has concubines.

As to Esau, Romans 9 says that God hated Esau; yet there is no reason given for this hatred.   The chapter suggests predestination and that there is no free will.   Basically, if God hates you before you're born, there's nothing you can do about it according to the bible.

9:10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;

9:11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)

9:12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

9:14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

As Chev points out, the 120-year-maximum-life previously decreed by God does not apply to Abraham or Ishmael.
