Atheists in Austin: The Fish, The Manfish and the Religion of Evolution

American Atheists protestJoe Zamecki, Texas State Director of American Atheists, and a number of other activists who want to see the separation of church and state preserved, showed up at the state capitol to protest the National Day of Prayer held there yesterday.

Instead of a discussion about the wall of separation, a passerby wanted to discuss "the religion of evolution."

A protester tried to explain to him that it took millions of years for species to evolve, and that a fish does not just automatically turn into a "manfish."  The Christian said that evolution is just a theory that cannot be proven because he has not seen a monkey turn into a man.  However, he was unable to prove the existence of God.

No side convinced the other and the National Day of Prayer carried on,  but at least Zamecki's group registered their opposition to government-sponsored prayer.  Some drivers passing the scene honked their horns in support.

As an atheist myself, I think there are much more important battles than the National Day of Prayer, such as teaching school boards that Creationism isn't science. This kind of thing just makes us look like a bunch of fussbudgets, getting ourselves into a tizzy over every little thing.

Other petty issues we shouldn't worry about: the ten commandments on a court house and "In God We Trust" on the money!

    Art,

Atheist activists like us have picketed over a number of different issues, and you're the first to indicate to me that this "kind of thing just makes us look like a bunch of fussbudgets, getting ourselves into a tizzy over every little thing." We didn't even hear that from the Christians. lol

I would try to "teach" a school board that Creationism isn't science, but they're not students, and they don't allow pickets in their offices. Also I don't want to do "battle" with any school board.

Petty? Government issue religion? Hey I'd love to discuss this more, in person. Why don't you come to a picket? It's easy…but it does take some dedication.

I see ape genetics in humans every day. He wants to see a monkey turn into a human now and doesn't see evolution? He's not looking hard enough. It's sad that our educational system has been so bad and I'm not sure if it's going to get much better in the near future, but hopefully it will.

I would try to "teach" a academy lath that Creationism isn't science, but they're not students, and they don't acquiesce pickets in their offices. Also I don't demand to do "battle" with any academy board.
