Abram is 99 years old and Almighty God appears to him, reminding him of the promise that he will have many heirs and be the forefather of great nations. This promise comes with a catch — Abram, every male in his household, and all of his male slaves have to be circumcised. God changes Abram's name to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah. He tells the 99-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah that they will have a son and Abraham fell on his face, laughing. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Ishmael gets circumcised along with Abraham.

Stuff to Comment About …
Slavery is A-OK. Verses 7, 10-11, 13 and 19 of Genesis Chapter 17 all discuss the circumcising requirement that extends not only to Abraham and his family, but to those males in the household who were "bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed." We can only conclude from this that God approves of slavery.
Good Ol' Family Values. As the Skeptic's Annotated version of the King James Bible notes, Ishmael (who was born to the slave Hagar and Abraham) is circumcised at 13 years old, yet his father Abraham abandoned Ishmael and Hagar when his son was a mere infant (Genesis 21:14).
Slavery and the Bible.
As the following video explains, churches and politicians alike used the Bible to justify slavery.
