The Jerusalem Post reported that Israel's President Shimon Peres is willing to hand over Israeli sovereignty of key Christian holy sites to the Vatican. The sites include:
- The Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth
- The Coenaculum on Mount Zion
- Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem
- The Church of the Multiplication on the Kinnere
The Coenaculum is a sticking point because it is also a Muslim holy site.
Relinquishing Israeli sovereignty over these sites would mean that the sites would become the property of Vatican City.
Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to visit to the region on May 11-15.
