The Bible Slam: Genesis Chapter 8

The Bible Slam: Genesis Chapter 8

This chapter starts out with God "remembering" Noah and the beings in the ark, so the flood waters were stopped and the ark finally lands.   Noah has to sacrifice some of the animals he had just saved as an offering to God.   God decides that He will not destroy the earth again, even though humans have evil hearts, and creates a rainbow to represent this promise.

Noteworthy Points.

  • (8:4-5) The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat in the seventh month. However, the mountain tops weren't visible until the tenth month.   (8:5).
  • What happened to the raven?
  • Depending on what version is read, the burnt offering would make the "clean" animals extinct.   If there were just two of each and one of each was killed, how could they reproduce?   What were "clean" animals, anyway?
  • What did the animals, birds, bugs and so on eat when they left the ark?   There would be no vegetation, and the carnivores would be eating the other animals, again leading to extinction of some of the species.
  • Children are evil?
  • After this God "said in his heart" that he'd never do it again because "man's heart is evil from his youth." God killed all living things in Genesis 6:5 because humans are evil, and then promised not to do it again in Genesis 8:21 because humans are evil.
  • Why the obsession by modern day Christians over the "end times" if God promised that the earth would not be destroyed, even though humans are evil since youth.

Has the Ark Been Found?

From time to time, archaeologists claim to have found Noah's ark.   In 2007, an interesting discovery was made. Was this Noah's ark? Or some other type of ship?
