The AP / Kansas City News has reported that legislation allowing school prayer is making its way through the Missouri legislature.
The House overwhelmingly endorsed a proposed change in the Missouri Constitution by a 127-25 vote. If approved on a second House vote and later by the Senate, it would appear on a statewide ballot next year.
The AP reports that:
Rep. Mike McGhee, R-Odessa, said his measure would not allow anything not already permitted under state law. Rather, he said, it's a response to reports from around the state of students being stopped while trying to pray at public schools.
Critics say that the constitutional amendment would have no practical effect since students already have the constititutional right to pray privately or in groups, so long as their prayer is not disruptive. According to the AP, Rep. Mike Talboy, a Democrat from Kansas City, said that "This is akin to us putting up an amendment to the people to rename the state of Missouri, the state of Missouri."
