Part 2 of the documentary on animal sacrifice that violated local zoning laws has been released. See the first part here.
The issue is this: How far does religious freedom go, particularly when it disturbs others?
In part two of this documentary series, the origins of Santeria are explored, as well as the rising conflict between practitioners who were sacrificing animals in their back yard and a neighboring teacher who was frightened by the sounds of animals being killed.
According to the documentary, Santeria is the fastest growing religion among Hispanics on the east coast. It is an African-based religion that was driven underground by the Catholic Church. There are some voodoo-like aspects to the religion.
While the Supreme Court ruled that people were free to practice their religion, including African types of religions like Santeria, it said that local zoning ordinances must still be honored. In the situation described in this documentary series, animal remains and uncollected garbage contributed to an unsanitary condition, clearly against city regulations.
