Many Republican/Christian conservatives believe that the ACLU is anti-American, often due to the rhetoric of the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Michael Savage attack the ACLU on a regular basis as being communist, and anti-American.
Some also believe that the ACLU is anti-Christian. To say this is patently untrue is not enough for such naysayers. Here's another clip of Bill O'Reilly advocating against the ACLU:
In Hartford, Connecticut today, Christian Navy junior officer Michael Isbicki finally won an honorable discharge from the US Navy as a conscientious objector with the help of the ACLU. When he joined up, he said he was following family tradition, but got to thinking after a while that perhaps being in the Navy was unChristian as he was religiously opposed to any kind of war and could be called upon to kill people:
"I believe that Jesus Christ calls all men to love each other, under all circumstances. I believe his teaching forbids the use of violence. I take the Sermon on the Mount literally," Izbicki wrote in his application for conscientious objector status.
The American Civil Liberties Union's Connecticut chapter filed a lawsuit against the US Navy on Izbicki's behalf last year after he was denied an honorable discharge twice.
