Immigrants Keep the Catholic Church Strong in the U.S.

Religious affiliation is declining in the United States, but the Catholic church remains the largest religious group nationwide.

The Catholic church continues to have a strong attendance due to a growing Hispanic population. Religion is a central pillar to Spanish-speaking Latin Americans; however, Latinos who are born in the United States tend to be less devout than their parents.

I live in the UK and the situation over here is very similar with Catholic communions being strengthened by immigrants from Eastern Europe. Although with the economic problems the UK is currently facing – 2.2m unemployed, and rising – the prospects for these immigrants are significantly diminished and there is lots of anecdotal evidence many are returning home.

In the UK I wonder will there shortly be a news headline documenting the dramatic fall in Catholic church attendance?
