The Jewish news service, JTA, reports that the United Nations' Human Rights Council passed a resolution condemning "defamation of religion" as a human rights violation on Thursday.
The resolution passed by by a vote of 23-11, with 13 absentions. The main opponents were Western nations, which said the resolution would restrict freedom of speech.
This is a non-binding resolution. The United States did not vote because it is not a member of the Human Rights Council. (See Reuters article.)
The AP reports that Christian, Jewish and secular groups joined one another in stating their opposition to this resolution.
