Rick Warren Criticized for Choice of Weight Loss Doctor Who Promotes Unbiblical Techniques

Steve McConkey of 'The Christian Investigator,' which finds fault with many pastors and churches, says that one of the doctors who is helping megachurch pastor Rick Warren lose weight promotes unbiblical values.

As to the doctor in question, he writes:

Dr. Daniel Amen promotes false meditation and tantric sex.

From Dr. Amen's blog, he said, "My favorite form of meditation is called Kirtan Kriya…I'm going to shut my door and meditate. If you want to join me, here's how you do it. This twelve-minute meditation involves chanting the following simple sounds — "saa" "taa" "naa" "maa" — while doing repetitive finger movements."

Kirtan Kriya is a meditation chant exercise originating from Kundalini Yoga. Kirtan Kriya involves chanting and using finger poses. This simple exercise is supposed to allow a person to relax.

Dr. Amen says he is a Christian. It is troubling that a doctor would promote false meditation. The Bible outlines how we are to pray while meditating on Bible passages.

According to The Christian Investigator, Dr. Amen graduated from the Oral Roberts School of Medicine.

Over the last year, yoga and meditation have come under fire by Christian fundamentalists, particularly from Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler who went so far to say that Christians should not be trying to raise their consciousness with meditation techniques.

McConkey is particularly miffed that Dr. Amen teamed up with Tantric sex expert TJ Bartel, who produced a six CD series called "Create More Passion Tonight." He believes Christians are embracing a dangerous practice in Tantric sex, saying "The Bible gives good advice for sex. Read the Song of Solomon. Is the Bible deficient?"

Wow, you're really stretching for some controversy here. A rather un-Christian approach if you ask me.

This method of meditation, it could be argued, clears one's mind in order to receive messages the Holy Ghost would have you receive.

It's a process of mind-clearing, opening to contemplation – not prayer.

      Hi John,

Thanks for your comments. We are only reporting what someone else said … this is not our opinion.

Personally, I think McKonkey's accusation is ridiculous.

Meditation for a Christian is called PRAYER! God wants us to come to Him, look on him (meditate on Him) and He will lead your path. This article isn't trying to start a controversy, it's stating the fact that anything that isn't of God isn't Biblical..rightfully so. Why do anything that isn't of God and what He says? Hasn't He been faithful and true to the Christians that put their Hope and Faith in HIm? Yes, AMEN
