Wild at Heart Discovering the Secret of a Mans Soul

Wild at Heart Discovering the Secret of a Mans Soul

Helping men rediscover their masculine heart, this guide to understanding Christian manhood and Christian men offers a refreshing break from the chorus of voices urging men to be more responsible, reliable, dutiful– and dead. God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, now available in trade paper, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great Book!
We went through this book in my bible study group. The first time through I thought it was alright. I decided to go through it again a year later and it really struck home this time. It is as powerful as your honesty and openess will allow it.

5 Stars Wild at Heart
This book is being read by my husband and at first he said he didn't really get into it, but now is unable to put it down. A fantastic book…he says

5 Stars Great experience
Great process. No issues. Book was delivered on time and without a scratch.

1 Star Wild Conclusions
My main problem with this book, is that it teaches Christian men to waste their time trying to be "radical". Now, it goes without saying that our Savior, Jesus Christ, was a radical and His teachings shook the religious foundations established around the Mosaic law. Also, we as a dying church need to be bold in our faith. However, that does not give men the right to be loud, problem-seeking, obnoxious people. And while I'm certainly exaggerating to a degree, Wild at Heart encourages that sort of attitude.

Fact: we are a body of believers whose purpose is to edify one another and to add to the kingdom. Wild at Heart does not encourage either. What it encourages is a "push my buttons and I'll push yours" mindset, and teaches the reader to always be defensive – quick to defend your opinion. And here and there, it quotes Scripture as its basis. Unfortunately, verses are taken entirely out of context in most respects, and I found myself countering each point in this book with the very Scriptures used to spearpoint Wild at Heart's premise.

One particular passage of Scripture shuts down this entire book: Romans 12. Starting at verse 16 for context: "Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but be content with average things. Do not be wise in your own conceits. Repay to no man evil for evil. Speak honestly and truthfully in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as long as it is up to you, live peaceably with all men."

All that said, there are some valid points within Wild at Heart, and I'm not condemning anyone who reads and/or recommends this book. My conclusion? John Eldridge might be a convincing author, and he may be right about some things, but his knowledge of the Scriptures is entirely off-base.

5 Stars Don't be a fool
Wow! What ever you are reading right now – put it down. You'd be a fool to not make this book your top priority. It is hands down the place to start recovering your God intended heart and soul as a man. Wild at Heart is in my top three books of all time (and I've read a lot of them). Those that have rated it poorly here on Amazon are captives of our liberal society gone terribly wrong. They are exactly the ones that need to embrace the message of this book, breakfree, and live the life God has designed for us.

Although, Eldredge uses plenty of contemporary examples it is solidly grounded in scripture and in the REAL character of Christ – balanced and paradoxical – a lover and a fighter. It pulls out the true passion in soul of Christ and all men – the masculine passion that our modern day society from schools, to government, to therapists, to churches (especially churches) try to squash.

If you feel dead inside from the daily grind, this book will give you life. If you have always been "Wild at Heart", as I have, it will focus your "wildness" in a Godly direction for His purpose vs. your own. For more than forty years, I have been bounded and chained with bouts of depression, lack of trust, and self-centered actions. This book has set me free and can set you free too. "Wild at Heart" is PRICELESS!
