Outrage in Brazil Over 9-Year-Old's Abortion

Time magazine is reporting that the Catholic Church has sparked anger in Brazil over the case of a pregnant 9-year old.

The girl had been raped and impregnated with twins by her stepfather and her family chose to have the child undergo an abortion.

Catholic Archibishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of the coastal city of Recife announced that the Vatican was excommunicating the family. According to Time's story, the Church excommunicated the doctors who performed the procedure as well.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape or when the mother's life is in danger.
