Religious rehab centers are opening throughout Russia, offering non-traditional aid to drug addicts in the country. Russia Today reports that critics argue that such centers are no more than sects, enabling addicts to trade one addiction for another.
Drug addiction is on the rise in Russia, with an estimated 600,000 or more addicts. The Federal Drug Control Agency places the number in the millions. There has been a corresponding rise of religious rehab centers, mostly by Pentecostal religions.
Bible and prayer sessions such as those offered by the Cornerstone Church are part of rehab efforts that focus on the spirit and do not offer counseling from trained professionals. Experts claim that recovering addicts become psychologically addicted to religion and are unable to function outside of the church.
