In psychological terms, conformity means the "Adaptation of one's behavior or beliefs to match those of the other members of a group."

Conformity is an attempt to "fit in" to social norms. It is not forced. Many people are not even aware that they are adapting their beliefs and behavior in order to conform.

In the 1950s, Solomon Asch researched the subject of conformity. Placed within a group of "planted peers," subjects were asked to answer simple questions about the length of lines shown to them. The planted peers knowingly answered incorrectly. Asch found that about 75% of the subjects tested knowingly gave an incorrect answer at least once in order to conform to the group of planted peers.

Here's a modern day re-enactment of Asch's test that shows, once again, that people will not speak the truth in order to conform.

The UK's Telegraph reports that Stanford University discovered that "if groups perform tasks in unison, such as marching, dancing and chanting, they show more loyalty towards each other and are less likely to go against the norm." The study suggests that group activites such as the "goose step" help to rally millions of people to the will of Hitler and Mussolini.
