Ten Commandments Will Not Be Installed at Madison County Courthouse

In Madison County, Florida, a religious group wanted to install a large monument of the ten commandments.  The statue would have been 1,300 pounds and about six feet tall.

FDR's Four Freedoms

Across the street is a statue of four angels, depicting Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 freedoms, which included freedom from fear, freedom from want, freedom of religion and freedom of speech and expression.

The religious group claimed that the ten commandments statue was an "acknowledgement of history marker with historical truths."  Opponents felt that it was not right to have religious guidelines erected at the courthouse.

The ministerial association wanting the statue said that it would pay for the  construction and installation of the statue, and that there would be  no cost for the county.  As to possible legal repercussions, the association told the county commissioners that various Christian liberty groups would defend the county at no charge.

Installation of the statue was defeated by the commissioners in a 2-3 vote in chambers.

In Dixie County, the ACLU is suing to remove a ten commandments monument.  The Supreme Court says that such statues are not inherently unconstitutional and must be considered on a case by case basis.
