Religious News Verses: Prayers, Gays, Muslims and a Splash of Dominionism

newsLou Engle is the GOP's new unofficial prayer leader, according to journalist Bruce Wilson.  The leader of 'The Call" showed up in Uganda this weekend to lead a prayer rally against homosexuals and witchcraft.  Although not quite endorsing it, Engle praised the “courage” and “righteousness” of Ugandan leaders and politicians backing the Anti Homosexuality Bill before Uganda’s Parliament. Wilson's expose, GOP Senator Sam Brownback’s Roomate Lou Engle Supports Eliminationist Antigay Bill, provides a disturbing report on the politicians involved in Christian dominionist theology, including Sarah Palin, and identifies the key "apostles" who are spearheading this form of evangelism.

The Miami New Times reports that George Alan Rekers, one of America's leading anti-gay activists, had allegedly hired a gay prostitute from RentBoy.com to carry his luggage.  Among other things, in 1983, he and James Dobson formed the Family Research Council, "a D.C.-based, rabidly Christian, and vehemently anti-gay lobbying group that has become a standard-bearer of the nation's extreme right wing."

An obscure health care law that was on the books in California for 50 years for "curing homosexuality" was removed yesterday by a 62-0 vote.

We'll have to wait and see if there is any outcry from the far right over the removal of this bill, now that it's come out of the closet, so to speak.

The homophobic rhetoric from the far right seems to go hand in hand with American Muslim bashing.  People who viewed the "May Day Cry to God" rally might recall the "prayer of repentance" for Minnesota's election a Muslim Congressman (at 2:33 of the video):

Franklin Graham is still steaming about his dismissal from leading a National Day of Prayer event at the Pentagon, and claims that his religious rights are being violated. He does not believe any other president would have allowed the dismissal to stand, but was careful in an interview on CNN to say that some unknown anti-evangelical staffer within the Obama administration, not Obama himself, was responsible for the decision.  Nonetheless, he thinks that Obama is "giving Islam a pass" by not commanding the Pentagon to reinstate Graham's National Day of Prayer appearance.

Bryan Fischer, of the American Family Association, claims that any Muslim unwilling to renounce Islam must be denied entry in the United States.

More Jail Cells Needed If National Day of Prayer Is Banned.

Reporting for The Examiner, Dianna Narciso tells us that Florida's Governor Crist will appear, in a video on giant screens, at the Heal Me Crusade, part of the National Day of Prayer event, at Plant City Stadium. Heal Me Crusade organizer Mikel Solomon had this to say about the National Day of Prayer:

"If they actually succeed in making the day unconstitutional, then you better build a lot more jail cells to hold all the people who will break the law."

Meanwhile, Michael Youssef, Founder and President of Leading The Way, has put out an urgent call for 100,000 Bible-believing Americans to covenant with him to pray daily for America between July 4th and November 2nd as part of the "God Save America" campaign.  Youssef believes that America is being overrun with socialism.
