The Nebraska legislature voted to approve the Abortion Pain Prevention Act, which will ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Proponents claim that fetuses feel pain at 20 weeks. The bill needs to go through two more processes before it is submitted to the governor.
The ACLU and Planned Parenthood see this as a constitutional quagmire. They say that the bill will ban abortions that are performed prior to fetal viability and has inadequate provisions to protect the health of the woman.
The U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973.
