Maddow on Religious Extremism – 30-40 Percent of Americans Believe in the End Times

Rachel Maddow interviewed Chip Berlet of Political Research Associates on March 29 about the apparent rise of extremist Christian groups in the United States. Berlet called attention to these groups before the Oklahoma bombing.

She compared their beliefs, such as belief that Jesus is returning, the pre-tribulation rapture, the mark of the beast and so on, with Christian fundamentalist groups. Berlet said that 30-40% of the American population religiously believes that the end times are coming, and of that group, 15% think it will happen in their lifetime. Berlet reminded her that just a few months ago in New Jersey, 30% of Republican in New Jersey believed that President Obama either was or could be the Anti-Christ.

He said that the militia groups had pretty much collapsed by 1999 and the groups forming now are new ones. Although he did not think there would be a national organization, Berlet was concerned that if they continue to be incited by right wing media, small cells of extremists will be popping up and possibly taking action.
