Dozens of gay and lesbian couples applied for wedding licenses yesterday, the first official day that D.C.'s law to legalize same-sex marriages took effect. Some religious leaders, such as Rev. Rob Schenck of Faith and Action, showed up in protest.
Schenck stood for four hours outside the courthouse in Washington, DC, preaching on the love of God and the sacred bond of marriage as between one man and one woman. He says that he also knelt to pray on the court's plaza.

According to a local Fox News report, the Westboro Baptist Church showed up, saying that the nation was doomed because of this and that fire would erupt from lava under the earth's crust. Other religious leaders showed up in support of the marriages. One pointed out that the Bible permitted polygamy.
