Back in December, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) issued a press release claiming that Washington DC voters were being denied their "God given rights" to vote on marriage equality. Same sex marriages, which are set to become legal tomorrow in the District of Columbia, may be put on hold, depending on what the Supreme Court does. Opponents to marriage equality have appealed to the Supreme Court, asking that lower court opinions be overturned so that DC residents can vote on the matter.
Although in response to another video, ProfMTH addresses an important question when it comes to legal rights: Are legal rights ultimately God-given rights? NOM's press release implies that there are God-given rights to deny rights to others who do not meet religious standards of morality.
The professor gives a strong and compelling argument about the definition of legal rights and how they are different from "God given" rights under the Constitution and statutory law.
