The Bible Slam: Numbers Chapter 26

In this chapter, Moses and Yahweh conspire for war.  All men who were 20 years old and up were drafted.  The chapter recounts various episodes that happened previously in the book of Numbers, as well as the genealogies of the tribes of Israel.

The people are told that they will conquer the land and divide it by drawing lots.

Discussion Points.

In the chain of descendants, it's interesting to note that one of the clans had no sons:

26:33 And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

It's unclear whether the daughters were to go fight, or if the daughters would receive inheritances.  It will be interesting to see if the clan of Zelophehad is mentioned again.

There are several discrepancies in the genealogy, particularly with respect to Benjamin, as Steve Wells points out in the Skeptics Annotated version of the King James Version.

Numbers 26 also recounts the first killing of freethinkers that had occurred in Chapter 16:

26:9 And the sons of Eliab; Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. This is that Dathan and Abiram, which were famous in the congregation, who strove against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they strove against the LORD:

26:10 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men: and they became a sign.

26:11 Notwithstanding the children of Korah died not.

Numbers 16 indicates that the deaths included "their wives, and their sons, and their little children."
