In Steve Fry's QI, he talked about Second Coming of Jesus. Michael William Miller claimed that Jesus was coming back in 1844. Over a million "Millerites" believed this, selling their property and possessions in anticipation. After Jesus didn't come back, several spin-off religions formed after "The Great Disappointment," including the 7th Day Adventists and the Jehovah's Witnesses.
As an aside, Fry pointed out that Jehovah's Witnesses were placed in Nazi concentration camps and had to wear purple triangles.
In America, about 50% of the population believes that Christ will return in the form of the rapture.
