Prop 8 – The Mormon Proposition Opens at Sundance

Prop 8, the Mormon Proposition, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Critics of Proposition 8 say that the LDS Church was a driving force behind the proposition.

The director of the movie is gay and a former Mormon; producers include a news journalist and another former Mormon.

The movie tracks the ballot initiative campaign. LDS officials did not see the entire film as of the time of the interview below, but one who saw the trailer is quoted as saying "It appears that accuracy and truth are rare commodities in this film." Gay rights advocates believe it is a fair portrayal.

Evidence concerning the extent of Mormon involvement in Proposition 8 was introduced and discussed in the federal trial over the constitutionality of the gay marriage ban. (Full hearing transcripts are here.) The trial has featured a number of experts who testified about discrimination toward gay people and the falsehoods spread about them. According to the trial testimony, the Mormon church did not take the "lead" in campaign efforts. Testimony revealed that the church's efforts were spearheaded by ProtectMarriage.com in order to create the appearance of distance. As reported on Prop 8 Trial Tracker:

This is perhaps the most explosive bit of all, from a document between the LDS Church and the campaign:

With respect to Prop. 8 campaign, key talking points will come from campaign, but cautious, strategic, not to take the lead so as to provide plausible deniability or respectable distance so as not to show that church is directly involved.

Utah's Senator Chris Buttars, who has said that gays are the greatest threat to America, will be retiring from the Utah state senate. He is well known for his anti-gay remarks. He claims that the film is not professional journalism and that he was deceived when interviewed for the movie. He said that his comments in the movie were his own and not as a spokesperson for the church.
