WOW! What a theory!
Intelligent Design; we all know that it's touted as the only major scientific theory in opposition to the Darwinian theory of evolution but what does it really say, what are the implications of this relatively new and serious scientific theory?
I'd like to star out with talking about the opposing theory of evolution and what it states before moving onto the theory of intelligent design (ID) and it's crushing explanatory power. The theory of evolution in a nutshell operates on 3 basic principals; the theory of natural selection originally developed by Charles Darwin, random genetic mutation, and genetic (or allelic) drift.
- Genetic drift is the change in frequency of genes in a alleles population do to random chance which has very little effect on evolution in large populations but is a major driving force in smaller isolated populations do to reduced size of the gene pool.
- Random genetic mutation is – as the name states – a random process in which genetic information is changed, added, or subtracted thereby changing the structures of the proteins that carry out functions in a given cell or organism. A mutation may be positive (adding or enhancing the efficiency of a given protein), neutral (simply changing the coding for a given protein but not the sequence of amino acids that compose it), or detrimental (adding a damaging function or eliminating the function of a protein).
- Natural selection is the non-random keystone of evolutionary theory. It combines genetic drift and random mutation with survival and reproduction to eliminate the randomness from the theory of evolution. Non-random natural selection takes many forms such as sexual selection (choosing a mate) and predatory selection (the ever popular arms race of predator and prey).
These three things (again in a VERY small nut shell) make up the theory of evolution which states that over time organisms gain or loose traits allowing a species to exploit a natural phenomena which allows them greater survivability and reproductive success.
The theory of evolution predicts many many things. For one that different genes, proteins, cellular structures, and body plans and structures will be homologous (having the same relative position, value, or structure) as the corresponding traits in other species closely related to it. It also predicts that different variations of a single organism will be found in different geographical areas and that one should be able (and in fact are able) to track the migration and evolution of that species through their genes and through the fossil record to their current habitat.
Evolution can also be used to explain why certain biological redundancies, flaws, and vestigial traits exist such as male nipples, an appendix prone to infection and rupture to such a degree that before appendectomies where common 1 in 20 people died because of their appendix, the blind spot in the human eye and why the eye itself is built backward with the light receptors underneath nerves (left: human [poorly built], right: octopus [well built]),

the reason we have a respiratory system and a digestive tract that are forced to share the same plumbing,
the reason our spines are a major deteriorating point of the human body (this is my spine there's a major herniation at L5 – S1 circled in yellow and yes it really hurts),
and the recurrent laryngeal nerve the travels down the neck, past the larynx, into the chest, around the aorta, and back up to the larynx. (PS In the giraffe the detour is almost 15ft and looks rather ridiculous.) just to name a few.

In fact nothing in biology makes any sense without the theory of evolution… So now lets move on to the major scientific opposition to the theory of evolution called intelligent design.
Intelligent design states that biological organisms are too well designed and too well ordered for random occurrences to have produced such well ordered and complicated organisms and ecosystems so their must be an intelligent entity who, in one form or another, designed all of the life on earth. So let's forgo the evidence for ID ( as we did with evolution because I'm not an expert and could write a small book on the subject) and just concentrate on the implications of this so called scientific theory. What does the theory of intelligent design predict or explain?

Oh I'm sorry I forgot I was supposed to answer that question. The theory of intelligent design predicts that when we find or observe an organism it is the way it is because it was made that way by an intelligent force and it explains that the reason organisms are the way they are is because an intelligent force made them the way they are. So the intelligent designer, designed male nipples, the appendix, the reversal and so the blind spot in the human eye but not the octopus', our spines, and the recurrent laryngeal nerve, along with making our teeth crooked, typhoid, genetic diseases, cancer, tuberculosis, smallpox, malaria, and male pattern baldness just to name a few.
I don't know about you but if I had drawn this blueprint, I think I'd resign.
