1 Star Memoir Not Science
"Biocentrism" by Lanza with Berman was a supreme disappointment. I really wanted to learn something new but found myself constantly frustrated as the author spent more time skipping down memory lane and dropping names than supporting his thesis. Perhaps it was the fact the book is written in first person but whether anecdotes about Barbara, her husband, Bubbles or the near death of Dennis I was not reading science. As memoir it could have been fairly interesting if a finer hand had performed some much needed editing.

While the rest of the world has been engaging in this type of "exploration" since the invention of LSD its adherents don't use the term "biocentrism" when making the same claims, they use New Age phrases and play chimes though. And I'm not sure whether I was more offended by the recycling of ideas I had encountered in class work at the University of Colorado in the 70's and in multitudes of previously published titles over the last half a century or by the constant repetition of the message as "proof" instead of being offered any original work done by the author. Lanza seems to both acknowledge that his ideas are not new and then insists that they represent not just a new and radical departure but a necessary consideration when solving the biggest questions cosmology asks. Such cognitive dissonance is constant in this waste of time. Citing pages and pages of decades old experiments he seems to imply that the greatest thinkers of our time were wrong or misguided and abracadabra we've arrived our next "principle" of biocentrism.

I was initially intrigued as to how this biologist had come to his understanding of consciousness as the prime mover of creation when the study of consciousness seems almost as impossible as the inability to bite your own teeth. Not only is the claim basically made that the authors were going to demonstrate it was the chicken that created the egg there were almost no details as to how the chicken accomplished this task.

The prime insight I came away with was the only thing Dr. Lanza did well was to prove he is a legend in his own mind.

5 Stars Intriguing, Eye-Opening Book
This is an intriguing and eye-opening book that is sure to generate resistance from those entrenched in the existing orthodoxy. Biocentrism proposes that it's time for humanity to move on – to dump its primitive, one-dimensional way of thinking. However, I do have to agree with Gooch, that while the proposals made in Biocentrism seem radical at first `a bit of reflection will soon make the images clearer and place us on the pathway to a better and more commonsensical mindset.'

5 Stars Brilliantly written – opens new possibilities
I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book as a gift during the holidays. As the title suggests, the book proposes that life and consciousness are the keys to understanding nature. I found the book to be eminently readable (and beautifully written).

Biocentrism does a wonderful job of challenging traditional, materialistic science. Lanza and Berman cover the incredible world of quantum physics, in which experiment after experiment conclusively show that particles respond to (indeed, is dependent upon) the presence of the observer.

I confess that my area of scientific expertise is not quantum mechanics, but I do understand what the authors are trying to say. To be sure, it makes you rethink everything you've been taught in school. I highly recommend you read this book, even if you have no scientific background. The book is also a reminder that there are still mysteries about nature and man that science hasn't even begun to tackle. You will have fun contemplating the new possibilities biocentrism proposes.

5 Stars Readable and engaging – deserves a wide readership
This is mind-blowing science, which reminds you how much further contemporary science still has to go. As others have pointed out, Stephen Hawking's latest thinking appears to converge on the same point as Lanza. A recent issue of Discover magazine states, "Hawking's most recent work explores the implications of the notion that the universe is a giant quantum phenomenon. The problem with conventional attempts to understand the cosmos, he now believes, is that researchers have failed to appreciate the full, bizarre implications of quantum physics. These efforts to create a unique theory that would explain all the properties of the universe are therefore doomed to fail." Hawking is now pushing a different strategy, which he calls top-down cosmology. "It is not the case, he says, that the past uniquely determines the present." In a recent paper, Hawking's wrote "The histories of the universe depend on what is being measured, contrary to the usual idea that the universe has an objective, observer independent, history." Dr. Lanza insists that future theories of the universe will be biocentric in nature. It seems (in a reversal from his past writing) Dr. Hawking might agree.

5 Stars OK, you've got to read this book!
I was honored to have Dr. Robert Lanza as a guest on my show. He is simultaneously brilliant, soulful and articulate. He takes what I think of as a pretty challenging topic, namely how the universe works, and explains it; not bad for only 207 pages! He picks up where traditional thought has failed us and kicks some serious scientific butt! It's total brain candy!
